- The Sword and the Chrysanthemum
by Ruth Benedict. A classic, not to be missed.
- The Japanese Today: Change and Continuity
by Edwin O. Reischauer and Marius B. Jansen. Very comprehensive, readable,
and sensitive description of Japanese people and their country.
- Japan In Pictures
the text used by the Concord Middle School Social Studies Department for
their Japan unit. A quick overview of Japanese history, geography, etc.
- Remade in Japan
by Joseph Tobin. Interesting look at Japan's economy and contemporary
society.
- The Material Child: Coming of Age in Japan and America
by Merry White. An account of growing up in Japan and America today.
